Drug Awareness Training

Expert-led training sessions to combat drug misuse effectively.

About Melanie Vella

I set up Melvel Training in 2009 to raise awareness about drugs in all sectors. Having qualified as a teacher in 1996, I taught in Malta and the UK but became disillusioned by the target-driven UK education system.

  • I gained CIPD Associate membership and then had the unique opportunity to work for a drug education charity. My role was to train civilian and Royal Military police officers to deliver drug education in schools. I also rewrote the drug education resource, bringing it national credibility and establishing it within service schools, based abroad.
  • Trained by Nottinghamshire County Council to be an Inspector for School Improvement Services, quality assuring schools’ drug policies and advising on drug policy writing, motivated my interest in other aspects of drug awareness work.
  • With a commitment to raising drug awareness to all sectors I set up Melvel Training. My first role was to plan and deliver drug awareness and brief advice training commissioned by the Crime and Drug Partnership in Nottingham.
  • Over the last 14 years I have worked with NHS, police, young people, teachers, city councils, charities, outreach services and businesses, to provide drug awareness training; developing understanding about the risk factors to misusing drugs, the impact of drug misuse and strategies to be proactive in managing drug related situations.
  • I also work in partnership with RealSense, and we have developed e-Learning courses about managing drugs in the workplace.

Why is Raising Drug Awareness Important?

For many people when they think of a drug they think of illicit drugs and have a stereotypical depiction of someone who uses them. In drug awareness training we consider ALL drugs. That includes alcohol, medicines, tobacco, caffeine, volatile substances and illegal substances. Drugs should NEVER be labelled as  good or bad. Any drug can be harmful if it is misused. ALL drugs have the potential to be misused.

There are numerous reasons that people use drugs and recognised risk factors that can lead to someone misusing drugs. Drug misuse is a health and wellbeing concern, but is not always regarded in that way.

The consequences are detrimental to an individual, to their family and friends, to a community, within the work place and to society. Anyone can be affected by substance misuse, either through their own use or someone else’s.
